ANNUAL NOTICE
School Attendance Review Board (SARB) Letter

Dear Parent/Guardian: 


The Western Placer Unified School district is dedicated to academic achievement and success for all students.  Regular attendance is an integral part of that success.  Many parents are unaware that going “out of town” with their children during school is an unexcused absence, as are most “family emergencies”.  In both cases, planning ahead can avoid unexcused absences and possible actions by the County School Attendance Review Board (SARB). 


State law states that absences are excused only if the child is ill (including an absence for the benefit of the pupil’s mental or behavioral health), has a medical appointment, is under quarantine, or there is a death/funeral in the immediate family (1 – 3-day limit).  All other absences are unexcused.  If your child has three unexcused absences, they will be considered truant. 


If a child struggles with attendance, there are supports the district may provide as a help to its families. These supports come in the form of:

  • Possible mental health and supportive services to help the student and family work through possible roadblocks to attendance.
  • Opportunities to meet with school staff to work together to implement a plan for improving attendance
  • Offering alternative educational programs so that your child can continue to be successful in school. 

Continued truancy, however, will eventually result in a referral being made to the County Student Attendance Review Board (SARB).  If a referral is made, a SARB meeting will be scheduled with the parents and the student. During the SARB meeting, the goal is to identify a solution or appropriate resources for resolving the student’s attendance problem. 


Research shows that missing 10 percent of school for any reason can translate into pupils having difficulty learning to read by third grade, achieving in middle school, and graduating from high school. So regular attendance at school is crucial for student success.


Students and parents must understand that school attendance is not a matter of choice but is a mandate.  The district’s goal is to assist students and families in alleviating the factors that interfere with their compliance with this matter, and to ensure a successful educational program.


Please work with your school administration to remedy any early attendance issues which arise in the new school year.

Junta de Asistencia del Distrito Escolar

El Distrito Escolar Unificado de Western Placer está comprometido con el logro académico y el éxito de todos los estudiantes. La asistencia regular es una parte integral de ese éxito. Muchos padres no saben que salir “fuera de la ciudad” con sus hijos durante el ciclo escolar se considera una ausencia injustificada, al igual que la mayoría de las “emergencias familiares”. En ambos casos, planificar con anticipación puede evitar ausencias injustificadas y posibles acciones por parte de la Junta de Revisión de Asistencia Escolar del Condado (SARB, por sus siglas en inglés).


La ley estatal establece que las ausencias solo se justifican si el estudiante está enfermo (incluyendo ausencias por motivos de salud mental o conductual del alumno), tiene una cita médica, está en cuarentena, o si hay un fallecimiento/funeral de un familiar directo (límite de 1 a 3 días). Todas las demás ausencias se consideran injustificadas. Si su hijo/a tiene tres ausencias injustificadas, se considerará que ha incurrido en ausentismo escolar.


Si un estudiante tiene dificultades con la asistencia, el distrito puede ofrecer apoyos para ayudar a las familias. Estos apoyos pueden incluir:

  • Servicios posibles de salud mental y apoyo para ayudar al estudiante y su familia a superar obstáculos que interfieren con la asistencia escolar.
  • Oportunidades para reunirse con el personal escolar y trabajar juntos en un plan para mejorar la asistencia.
  • Opciones de programas educativos alternativos para que su hijo/a continúe teniendo éxito en la escuela.

Sin embargo, el ausentismo continuo eventualmente resultará en una derivación a la Junta de Revisión de Asistencia Escolar del Condado (SARB). Si se realiza una derivación, se programará una reunión SARB con los padres y el estudiante. Durante esta reunión, el objetivo es identificar una solución o recursos adecuados para resolver el problema de asistencia del estudiante.


Las investigaciones demuestran que faltar al 10 por ciento del ciclo escolar, por cualquier motivo, puede dificultar que los alumnos aprendan a leer para el tercer grado, logren buenos resultados en la escuela intermedia y se gradúen de la escuela secundaria. Por eso, la asistencia regular a la escuela es fundamental para el éxito académico.


Los estudiantes y padres deben entender que la asistencia escolar no es opcional, sino un requisito obligatorio. El objetivo del distrito es ayudar a los estudiantes y sus familias a superar los factores que interfieren con este cumplimiento y garantizar un programa educativo exitoso.


Por favor, colabore con la administración de su escuela para resolver cualquier problema de asistencia desde el inicio del nuevo año escolar.
